Four hemophiliac patients successfully treated with gene therapy

Hemophilia, a disease whose victims can suffer serious internal bleeding and may bleed to death from injuries, has a long and eventful history. Caused by defective blood clotting factors, the disease has been with us since at least the second century, when a rabbi gave mothers whose first two sons had bled to death from circumcision wounds permission to leave the third sons uncircumcised. It also famously afflicted several members of European royal families. But a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine brings us a bit closer to a new kind of historic event: a cure.
Following up on years of preclinical trials, including the curing of hemophiliac mice earlier this year, scientists gave six patients a gene therapy treatment, injecting them with a specially built virus carrying a functioning version of the gene for the defective clotting factor. The virus inserted the gene into liver cells, which proceeded to manufacture the clotting factor, and the patients maintained elevated levels of it for over 6 months. Four of the patients were able to stop receiving injections of clotting factor (the current treatment) altogether.

as Barack Obama. Not a single one.

Someone I know has a photo up on his Facebook, saying, “This is the best Christmas gift (idea) ever. If I come across these, I’ll sell sheets of 5 for 25 cents.”

It was a fucking roll of toilet paper with a picture of Barack Obamas’ presidential photo on each sheet.

Seriously? You’re not supposed to defame images of the POTUS. It happens, yes, but putting it on a fucking roll of toilet paper? To wipe your ass after you shit? To put your shit, literally, on the face of the president?

Tell me when that has happened to a white president.

I’ll wait.

I’m actually going to disagree with this one, especially since it took me like 5 seconds to find this:

http://www.prankplace.com/shop/Product/Politics-Sucks/George-Bush-Toilet-Paper-4396.aspx

I really think in the grand scheme of “disrespecting the office” W got it way worse. Obama gets crap but all the stuff that isn’t outright racism (<— that statement there is key to this thought) is really banal, he barely has anything that you can even caricature that much. He’s got a very distinct pattern of speech but that’s about it. W on the other hand was portrayed as the most child-like simpleton or some bizarre texas oil-man firing his pistols into the air. In 15-20 years we’re still going to look back and laugh at Will Ferrell’s Bush and that caricature is really going to affect how he’s going to be remembered. Now I’m not saying that Bush deserves any greater respect but the way his legacy and presidency was warped by pop culture, toilet paper included, is worse than anything Obama has gotten or probably will ever get.

-Joe

Oh yeah, President Obama doesn’t have it all that bad if you discount everything racist. That makes allllllllllllllllllllllll kinds of sense. Did it occur to you for one hot second that as someone who feels perfectly justified in DISCOUNTING RACISM you have NO business weighing in on the kind of vitriol that is aimed at President Obama?

PROTIP: DON’T.

because it’s not like racism is a form of disrespect or anything. yup, it *totally* shouldn’t count.

The fuck? I kinda want to change my URL to STFUwhiteliberals because no. Just no. See, there was W toilet paper and all kinds of stuff like that, but did W have to deal with Birth Certificate drama well into his 3rd year in office due to the color of his skin? Hell no. Did W have to answer to A FUCKING TV PERSONALITY/HOTEL OWNER AS IF ANYTHING THEY HAD TO SAY WAS FUCKING RELEVANT TO HIS OFFICE? HELL NO!

Donald Fucking Trump and the white supremacist media fucking shut down the country with demands to see the “real” birth certificate IN THE THIRD FUCKING YEAR OF BEING IN OFFICE. The white supremacist media juuuuust falls short of calling him “darkie” constantly, and NEVER refers to him by his title, even sarcastically. How many times have actual fucking party leaders called Obama “boy” and such? Not to mention fucking newcasters who half the time are/were involved in the party.

You know what though, Bush fucking deserved the disrespect. He deserved 100x more than what he got. Remember, that shit kicking motherfucker didn’t even get elected to his first term in office. The Supreme Court essentially handed him the crown. When you steal the fucking election like that you deserve no respect whatsoever.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Yeah I’m gonna have to disagree with Joe on this one. You can’t discount the racism.

Also there’s evidence suggesting Republicans cheated in the swing state of Ohio for the 2004 election too.

Also gonna have to RESPECTFULLY disagree with Joe on this one. The birth certificate story and the amount of national media attention it was allowed really puts it over the top for me.

In 2008 I lived in rural Wisconsin. I was a sophomore in high school and took a yellow bus to school every day and on the way home we saw an obama doll holding a sign saying “obama.” The doll was hanging from a noose. These things were not uncommon.

This was my sign I made. My mother’s boyfriend at the time said, “You’re gonna put that outside my window, do you want me to get shot?”

^Yep, it was the same way in Tennessee. Noose-Obamas, resurgence of burning crosses in the yards of known democrats, etc.

"Unlike classroom lessons, which are supposed to follow local, state or federal guidelines, Internet programs have no independent standards. And proponents of abstinence-based sexual education argue that these digital services presume that sexual activity among teenagers is the norm, and do not spend enough time on alternatives. … Those who run digital programs say they simply want teens to have accurate information, to help them make good decisions. Even though popular culture is saturated with sex, facts and advice can be hard to find."
